In Loving Memory of John Hoang Sarvey
6/1/67 ~ 11/25/12
City Year Staff Member: 1994-2006
The City Year community is deeply saddened at the passing of John Hoang Sarvey.
Through twelve years of dedicated service, from 1994 through 2006, John played a critical role in building City Year, bringing his powerful combination of innovative thinking, deep commitment to service and civic engagement, and enormous personal warmth to each of the vital roles he played. John served as City Year’s first National Alumni Director, laying the groundwork for the continued civic engagement of what is today an alumni that is 17,000 members strong. John had the unique distinction of serving as an executive director of two City Year sites, City Year San Jose and City Year Boston. As National Vice President for Service, John pioneered the organization’s service in high poverty schools that is today at the center of City Year’s work to address the nation’s high school dropout crisis.
John enriched the lives of all of us who had the opportunity to work him, and – through his work – improved the lives of thousands of young people who served as a City Year corps members and the people and communities they served.
John was an inspiring colleague, and to many of us, a dear personal friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family. A Facebook page has been established for those who wish to hearten John’s family with their messages of support and remembrance.
With deep respect,
Michael
