City Year Miami Launches!

Volunteer FL

Volunteer Florida1On Friday, September 26, City Year Miami officially launched, showcasing 82 idealistic and enthusiastic new members sporting the trademark red City Year jackets. City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them
the skills and opportunities to change the world.

As tutors, mentors, and role models, these idealistic leaders make a difference in the lives of children, and transform schools and neighborhoods in 18 U.S. locations and Johannesburg, South Africa. Just as important, during their year of service, corps members develop civic leadership skills they can use throughout a lifetime of community service.

Volunteer Florida2The City Year Miami launch helped to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the City Year program. With a founding corps of 82 members, City Year Miami is the largest founding corps in the history of the program to date!

Speakers included City Year Founder Michael Brown; best-selling author Brad Meltzer; CEO of The Children’s Trust of Miami Modesto Abety; City Year Alumnus Matt Axelrod; Citi Smith Barney Senior Vice President Kevin McCarty; Knight Foundation Program Director Lorenzo Lebrija; Miami Mayor Manny Diaz; and Volunteer Florida CEO Wendy Spencer.

“It was such a moving experience to see these young idealists as they begin their year of service,” said Volunteer Florida CEO Wendy Spencer. “Their energy and visibility in Miami-Dade County schools will give our children positive role models to look up to and emulate as they grow into young adults.”
