Work with Kids

By Jennifer Cogswell

“Serving in schools gave me the opportunity to give the future's most important resource - children - a voice, whether through helping them read a book, discussing social justice issues or developing a school newspaper.”
– Nisah Abraham, Corps Member

Most City Year corps members work directly with children to help students strengthen their academic and life success.  Through City Year’s Whole School, Whole Child service model, you will work with schools to provide structured academic support, create in-school and after-school programs, and generate positive school climate.

As a City Year corps member, you will work with youth by:

  • Providing one-on-one or small group tutoring and mentoring
  • Assisting teachers in classrooms
  • Leading after-school activities
  • Organizing enrichment activities, such as student councils and service clubs
  • Teaching curricula on important social issues including poverty, environmental protection, health and wellness and violence.
  • Becoming an integral part of the students' school experience

Because you and your team members will be assigned to serve in the same schools and after-school programs for the duration of the year, you’ll develop long-term relationships with the students in those programs as you help strengthen their academic and life success.
