The Educator Academy offers City Year alums

Teaching residency

The Educator Academy (formerly Kansas City Teaching Residency) will recruit, prepare, place and retain passionate individuals to join the teaching profession. During the yearlong residency, you will receive:

• $25,000 annual living stipend plus health benefits and childcare assistance
• Missouri Teacher Certification
• co-teaching opportunities with collaborating teachers and experienced teacher educators
• master’s in teaching from the University of Missouri Kansas City (with free textbooks and access to student benefits)
• Segal Education Award of $7,395 upon successful completion of the program

After completing the residency year, residents agree to teach in Kansas City Title 1 schools for three additional years while continuing to receive personalized coaching and support. A three-year teaching commitment to Kansas City Public Schools earns graduates:

• membership in a supportive alumni network
• opportunities for leadership in schools and the Educator Academy

Why City Year loves the Educator Academy

The Educator Academy is a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 to improve student outcomes by preparing, certifying, and retaining highly effective teachers who receive rigorous preparation and support. It recruits individuals committed to creating a high-quality education system in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Educator Academy provides an alternative pathway to teaching, equipping aspiring educators with the training and support needed to be successful. Through mentorship from experienced teachers and master’s-level coursework, teacher candidates develop the skills and certification required to make a meaningful impact in schools that have fewer resources in Kansas City.

The Educator Academy envisions a Kansas City where every child has access to excellent education. It strives for a local school system filled with dedicated, well-prepared teachers who understand and meet the needs of all students. The City Year experience strongly contributes to future success as a Teacher Resident with The Educator Academy, and completing a City Year term improves an applicant’s likelihood of being selected for the program.
