They aren’t joking when they say everything's bigger in Texas. North Texas is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, with Dallas-Fort Worth recently becoming the fourth largest metropolitan area in the U.S. The Dallas Independent School District (DISD), with 160,000 students enrolled in more than 200 schools, is the 16th-largest school district in the country. The District is at the forefront of innovation in education, and City Year is proud to partner with DISD to support the needs of the growing student population.
After an incredible start-up campaign that saw 19 young adults serving in two high schools, City Year Dallas is excited to begin their Founding Year with teams of 8-10 AmeriCorps members serving in five schools. AmeriCorps members will serve roughly 5,000 students in three Dallas communities, working with students, teachers, school staff and administration, and community and corporate partners to improve school culture and climate,as well as students’ attendance, behavior, course performance and college and career readiness.
Our start-up teams did incredible work in the short six months of their service, so we're really excited to see what our teams can do when they have a full year to make an impact. Our schools are ready, our teachers are ready, and our AmeriCorps members are ready. We're doing big things in Dallas, and we can't wait for our Founding Year to start!
