With mild temperatures, lots of sunshine and theme parks galore, it’s not surprising that Orlando, Florida is one of the top vacation destinations in the U.S., with 65.5 million people visiting in 2018, more than any other destination in the world. While Orlando certainly is a popular spot for some R&R, the city has so much to offer residents year-round, including a growing cohort of young professionals. Read on to learn more about why City Year Orlando is a great place to choose for your year of service.

Arts and culture experiences are plentiful.

Orlando is an active and vibrant city. Like to immerse yourself in a diverse array of community events? Arts and culture are taken seriously in Orlando, you can choose from a night at the ballet, opera, a tour of public art, museum galleries, immersive events, cultural celebrations and more!

Like to bike instead of drive?

Orlando is bike friendly and has tons of local trails. There are scenic rides with lush hills and parks, or depending on your interest, routes that are paved or more rustic. Take a book and pack a meal for your off the beaten path adventure and make a day out of your excursion.

Nice weather is always a plus.

Orlando has a subtropical climate with more than 200 days of sunshine a year. The average temperature in the spring, fall and winter is around 75 degrees. Summers can get quite warm but provide great opportunities to lounge at the beach, pool or even jump into one of Central Florida’s renowned cold springs. It won’t take you long to ditch that winter coat and collection of snow boots. But definitely don’t forget the picnic supplies.

Venture out into the great outdoors.

Because of the region’s weather and topography, there are incredible opportunities to get outside in Orlando. The city is about an hour from the beach, has numerous cold springs to visit, as we already mentioned, and state parks with bike and walking trails. There are also endless outside festivals, events and farmer's markets. One spot the locals recommend is East End Market which hosts culinary events and offers seasonal produce and is known as “Central Florida’s Food and Culture Hub.”

Get resident discounts on all the theme parks you love.

With Walt Disney World less than 20 miles away, you’ll be tempted to visit as often as possible! Universal Studios, LEGOLAND, Disney World, SeaWorld and others offer price cuts for residents that range between 10 to 30 percent. Maybe you can invite family and friends down to join you! City Year Orlando AmeriCorps members may also receive special opportunities to attend events and visit theme parks through our site sponsors.

And to top this list….

Orlando is truly a unique and vibrant place to be but at City Year, we would argue that serving the 10,000 students in our eight Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) partner schools is the best thing about living and working in Orlando.

If you want to be a part of a team that makes a lasting impact in the lives of students through the power of mentorship and academic support, you should consider applying to be an AmeriCorps member with City Year Orlando.
