By the City Year Boston Alumni Board
As City Year alumni, we share a common history: experiences as corps members that helped define many aspects of our lives. Our time in the corps transformed our passion for service into action for change. Whether our year of service was two or 20 years ago, our dedication to “service to a cause greater than self” remains constant.
After graduation, many of us yearned to find a way to stay connected and to continue contributing to building a better community, nation, and world for all of us. That’s why Red Jacket Weekend is such an amazing opportunity! At Red Jacket Weekend, you can reconnect with people you served alongside, the giants on whose shoulders you stood, and those who filled your boots. This year, the event is from September 19-21.
With so many different events—the Alumni and Leadership Reception on Friday, Opening Ceremony and service on Saturday, and Boston excursions on Sunday—there really is something for everyone. Last year, we heard from so many people just how tremendously enjoyable it was to attend Red Jacket Weekend events. A highlight for our Alumni Board co-chair David Lieberman, ’00 ’01, was the alumni reception, where he was able to celebrate with fellow alumni in our very own City Year Headquarters. The Service Day on Saturday was a chance for Isabel Barros, ’12 ’13, to serve on a project with a team of her alumni friends, and for Amy Ebbeson, ’96, to share her service experience with her son firsthand. And for Ayanna Ashley Doiron, ’94, Red Jacket Weekend was the spark that reignited her passion for City Year and re-engaged her in the alumni community after years away—and prompted her to join the Board!
We hope you will join us at Red Jacket Weekend on September 19-21 this year! Whether you join David at the Alumni and Leadership Reception at the State Room on Friday, Isabel and Amy at Opening Ceremony and Service Day at the Condon Elementary School on Saturday, or Ayanna on a Sunday excursion—we want to meet you. Registration opens on August 12 at 12:00 p.m. Your friends, family, and colleagues are welcome to come too!
Red Jacket Weekend’s events are exactly the kind of engagement opportunities we, as an Alumni Board, imagined for our fellow alumni: a family-friendly service event, opportunities to chat and connect with different members of the City Year Boston community in informal settings, and the chance to demonstrate your: spirit, discipline, purpose, and pride. Please join us on September 19-21—we’ll see you there!
