This is for You. You Always Help Me When I Don't Understand

“Estoy triste porque es mi cumpleaños y no entiendo.” I'm sad because it's my birthday and I don't understand... For many students in AmeriCorps member Madison Hafitz's classroom, English as a second language presented a constant challenge, particularly in math. After her student broke down in tears out of frustration during a math lesson on his birthday, Madison sat with him for the rest of his day to make him feel better and coach him through. The next morning, he bounded up to her with a surprise wrapped in tin foil. “Esto es para ti. Siempre me ayudas cuando no entiendo.” This is for you. You always help me when I don’t understand.
