Staples also donates portable SMART Board and school supplies to improve learning environment for students and support teachers
BOSTON, Mass. (November 17, 2015) - Students entering the City Year afterschool program at the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain today were surprised with a newly remodeled resource room thanks to Staples. After the new space was revealed, representatives from Staples presented the school with a portable SMART Board and joined City Year Boston AmeriCorps to distribute school supplies to students and teachers.
“We’re thrilled to support the Curley school and City Year Boston to help them to focus on what they do best – inspiring students to reach graduation and beyond,” said John Burke, Chief Culture Officer, Staples. “It’s exciting to provide this new space and supplies for all the teachers and students to help enhance their learning environment.”
The event celebrated Staples’ commitment to education and creating positive learning environments for students in the Jamaica Plain and Boston Public Schools communities. Donated artwork, banners, and furniture were installed to create a vibrant space for Curley K-8 students to work alongside City Year Boston AmeriCorps to increase their academic achievement and school engagement. In addition to the room makeover, Staples donated individual school supplies to all 876 students and robust resource kits, including a Staples gift card, to all 60 teachers of the Curley K – 8 School.
"We are extremely grateful for all the work City Year and Staples have done here at the Curley K-8 School," said Boston Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Chang. "I recently visited the Curley and saw the amazing community service and academic support projects City Year conducted with the students, and it's important for partnerships such as these to continue throughout BPS. The new After School Resource Room that was unveiled today renews our commitment to continuous learning for our students, even after the school day ends."
Curley school students and teachers attended the room renovation event and were excited for the supply its and new SMART Board.
“We are delighted to have a fresh space that students will want to come to for afterschool tutoring and mentoring,” said Katie Grassa, Principal of the Curley school. “At the Curley, we foster a strong culture around caring and service, and the actions of organizations like Staples and City Year Boston are emblematic of what we try to teach our students.”
This is the second year that City Year Boston is serving the Curley School’s students in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. A total of 265 City Year Boston AmeriCorps members are serving in 21 Boston Public Schools, reaching more than 10,000 students every day with attendance and academic supports.
“Making school a welcoming place is critical for motivating kids to attend and stay on track to graduate,” said Sandra Lopez Burke, Vice President and Executive Director of City Year Boston. “Bright, energetic space is a key component and we at City Year are grateful for Staples’ continued support of student achievement in Boston Public Schools.”
