Opening Day ceremonies are the literal and symbolic beginning to a new year of helping students to change their educational outcomes and their futures as a whole. City Year Cleveland launched 60 AmeriCorps members into service in seven Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools this year.

City Year Cleveland welcomed community partners on October 9, 2015 to their Opening Day Ceremony.  Guests joined our AmeriCorps members as they recited the City Year and AmeriCorps pledges to publicly show their commitment to the communities they serve and officially kick off their year of national service. Mylayna Albright, V.P. External Affairs, AT&T, spoke to the crowd on AT&T’s corporate partnership with City Year, such as the AT&T sponsored Book Club and presented City Year with a $15,000 check. Also, alumni, DeVaughn Exum, City Year Cleveland 2013-2015, provided inspirational words to the AmeriCorps members while ensuring them that the work they are embarking on now will provide opportunities throughout their future. His work with City Year allowed him to transition iinto his current role with University Settlement.  Several City Year Cleveland partners came to support the event including United Way of Greater Cleveland, Bank of America, Teach for America, Cobalt Group, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and The Albert M. Higley Company.  Guests toured the new office space while enjoying a continental breakfast and interacting with AmeriCorps members. As a special feature AmeriCorps members demonstrated different interventions they do in the classroom with students in our schools.
