The Florida Blue Team at Andrew Jackson Senior High School has had an eventful month. As a school team, we have finished our first quarter at school and three months of service as City Year corps members!
At school, we have started working with our academic focus lists in the classroom and are currently in training to coach and mentor our behavior list students. This month we have also had team members chaperone field trips to Florida State University in Tallahassee for a college visit, to the Florida Forum where students had the opportunity to hear Michael J. Fox’s personal story and ask him questions, and to the Jacksonville Jaguars football game against the Miami Dolphins as part as the Honor Rows program. Overall, this month has provided us with more opportunities to build relationships with our students in and out of the classroom.
On October 9th, our team joined the rest of the City Year Jacksonville corps to receive our red jackets and celebrate Opening Day at City Hall. The Opening Day ceremony included power greeting, physical training, and multiple speakers, including Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Vitti. Our team was also able to meet some representatives from our team sponsor, Florida Blue.
Our team has also been able to reach the neighborhood surrounding Andrew Jackson High School. Specifically, our whole team volunteered for an afternoon of service at Brentwood Elementary on October 17th and corps member Blake Cullen volunteered at the Fall Family Festival on October 25th at Brentwood Park where he assisted with games and provided Halloween candy to youth. Several members of the team also attended the homecoming parade and football game. It was nice to immerse ourselves into the community that we serve by taking part in traditional homecoming activities. We hope to find more opportunities outside of school to build relationships with our community. With the first quarter of school in the books, our days of service have been fast-paced and positive overall. We look forward to continuing to work with our students and positively impacting them in their educational and life trajectories.
