City Year Benefits, Stipend and Segal Education Award

Total Compensation and Funding

For your 11-month commitment, you’ll receive an education award, be eligible to receive scholarships at leading colleges and graduate schools and be compensated through a living stipend and health insurance benefits.

Living Stipend and Living Expenses

City Year provides a modest living stipend of $564 bi-weekly and health insurance. Many AmeriCorps members stretch their stipend dollars by sharing housing with other AmeriCorps members, making shared meals and taking advantage of varied local partnerships at City Year sites such as transportation passes or special AmeriCorps member discounts. Uniform parts are provided by Aramark and bags are provided by Timbuk2.

AmeriCorps Educational Funding

As a member of the federal AmeriCorps program, you are eligible to earn the Segal Education Award (valued at $5,815) at the completion of your service year, which can go toward pursuing further education or to pay off existing, qualified student loans. Additionally, over 100 colleges and universities nationwide augment the Segal Education Award in some way, including matching your award amount, waived registration fees, course credits, or service scholarships.

During your service with us, you can request that qualified federal student loans be put into forbearance. Upon successful completion of your term, you may also request the accrued interest be paid by the National Service Trust, federal administrator for AmeriCorps’ education benefits.
