Kansas City

Our staff, alumni, board and partners are committed to building a stronger city by supporting local schools and helping our AmeriCorps members become civic leaders.

Jeff Shafer

Sr. Vice President and Executive Director

CY alum ‘11 &’12

Jeff Shafer serves as the Executive Director of City Year Kansas City. In this role, Jeff maintains and grows strategic relationships with Kansas City public schools, City Year Kansas City’s board, corporate and philanthropic partners, and the wider Kansas City community.

Raised in Kansas City, Jeff grew up attending Kansas City Public Schools and is a graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy. He then spent 10 years in Chicago, where he received a B.A. in marketing communications from Columbia College Chicago and first got involved with City Year by serving as an AmeriCorps member from 2010-2012 on Chicago’s South Side. Jeff then transitioned to the staff team, gaining experience in both program implementation as an Impact Manager and fundraising as a Grant Writer and eventual Development Director during his transition back to KC in 2015 to help launch City Year Kansas City, which serves in the same school district he was raised.

Jeff also serves on the board of Brothers Liberating Our Communities, a nonprofit aimed at recruiting and retaining more Black Males as educators, and Charlotte Street, an incubator, provocateur, and connector for the region’s contemporary arts community. In addition to education, Jeff Shafer is passionate about the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, KC Current, and music as he is also a part of the local music scene, performing with his live instrumentation hip hop band under the moniker “Flare Tha Rebel”.

These talented and dedicated professionals support the success of our students and develop our AmeriCorps members as leaders.
