Marcelino Plascencia is a College Access Program Advisor with the Fulfillment Fund. City Year and the Fulfillment Fund work closely at NOW Academy to help students reach their full potential.
How would you describe a typical City Year corps member? Based on my interactions with City Year, they are always busy! They are treated as a part of the NOW Academy staff. Knowing the hours that City Year members put in, I know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. A City Year member is always looking for ways to give back and is dedicated to service.
How does City Year build a positive school culture and climate? It’s great to have people who are interested in giving to a community that lacks resources. Young people in the classroom become role models, which is very powerful to students. Many of them may not know a college graduate, so it’s good for them to learn about college at a very young age.
Why is City Year necessary? Service is necessary because it completely changes a person whether they know it or not. It may be right away, or a week, or a year, but everyone will eventually realize it – especially working with inner-city youth in education. It puts everything into perspective.
