By Jessica Gregory AmeriCorps member, 109th Street Elementary School
Santiago Santana is a 5th grade teacher at 109th Street Elementary School in Watts. A recent Credential graduate from California State University – Dominguez Hills, this is his first year teaching in an elementary school.
“I wasn't familiar with Watts, other than what I had heard about it. It was definitely hard to adjust to. I've had to do much more behavior management than I expected. I'm from Wilmington, which isn't too far away, but it's a very different place. Student teaching was easy, rather than having my own classroom here.”
“Having a City Year AmeriCorps member in the classroom has been helpful, she's really good with the kids. She knows how to communicate with them. She has been helping with their academics and keeps them on-track. It is definitely been nice to have an extra set of hands in the classroom.”
