The United Way of Greater Los Angeles has been an incredible champion of City Year Los Angeles since our founding in 2007. Through the organization’s “Creating Pathways Out of Poverty” campaign, United Way of Greater Los Angeles has also become an integral partner to the Diplomas Now initiative, investing funds in support of the three national nonprofits partnering on Diplomas Now: Johns Hopkins University’s Talent Development Secondary, Communities in Schools, and City Year.
Diplomas Now pairs comprehensive teacher development and student social services from Talent Development and Communities in Schools, along with City Year teams to provide tutoring, mentoring, and engagement activities at the required scale. The recognition for Diplomas Now as a leading innovation in education reform nationally validates the importance of City Year’s model in turning around low-performing Los Angeles schools.
Diplomas Now started as a pilot with one 700-student middle school in Philadelphia in 2008-2009. Today, it serves 31,000 students in 13 cities, and City Year is a proud Diplomas Now partner here in Los Angeles.
