Welcome to Sacramento!
Sacramento is home to a welcoming community known for its commitment to improving opportunities for young people. City Year is proud to work alongside teachers and community partners to support students across the city.
Living in Sacramento
While more affordable, Sacramento is still a big city—with all the big city amenities—yet maintains the neighborhood feeling and slower pace of life found in smaller towns and cities.
Sacramento is a welcoming and energetic city with lovely weather and a relatively low cost of living, making it an ideal place for a year of service. We are so excited to help you make this great city your new home.
California’s capital is the sixth largest city in the state, with approximately half a million people in the city proper and a metropolitan area of nearly 2.5 million people. It is also the “fastest growing big city in California,” according to the Sacramento Bee in 2017, as well as one of the top 10 most diverse cities in the country, according to NBC News, and the most integrated city in the country, according to Priceonomics.
- Most AmeriCorps members live in Pocket, East Sacramento, South Sacramento, Oak Park, or a neighboring suburb/city and on average pay $600-$800/month with roommates.
- Confirmed AmeriCorps members will receive a housing guide with neighborhood descriptions of where previous AmeriCorps members have lived and other helpful hints.
- Our AmeriCorps members recommend having a car if possible, although all our schools are accessible by public transportation and AmeriCorps members receive free Sacramento Regional Transit passes for the bus and light rail system during their year of service.

This year, 62 City Year AmeriCorps members will support over 4,000 students in 7 Sacramento schools.
