Why did you join City Year?
In college, I studied philosophy and mathematics, but I also had several experiences that involved providing mentoring and academic support to low-income youth. It was enough to pique my interest in education, and after reading about City Year's holistic approach to addressing the high-school dropout rate, I decided to apply so I could sample the range of options for working in the education system.
Why did you decide come back for a 2nd year and 3rd year?
Tutoring and facilitating an after-school program, like any complex cognitive skill, require deliberate practice to gain mastery. At the end of my first year, I felt I still had a lot to learn - and hence a lot still to give - and so I applied for the 2nd year corps member position so I could extend and deepen my impact. For round 3, I'm looking forward to helping corps members develop into incredible tutors and mentors, as well as helping "clock-build" by creating systems that better develop and empower future corps members to solve.
What are you looking to do after City Year?
After next year I will be with the Urban Teacher Center, a 4-year residency program to prepare teachers for the demands of teaching in an urban setting. I feel ready for the program, thanks to the experiences I've had here, and I'm excited to have some great experiences this coming corps year!
