City Year Tulsa establishes a new Affinity Group to create space for ACMs of color to not only share their experiences and support each other during their service, but also educate all ACMs on how to address and solve racial issues inside and outside City Year and connect with Tulsa's black community.

Reflections & Ripples: City Year Tulsa Examines Community’s Racial History to Develop Cultural Awareness & Advocacy

City Year Tulsa’s AmeriCorps Members took time during their annual Mid-Year Summit to reflect on the ways history has impacted Tulsa, their students and themselves at the Greenwood Cultural Center where they learned about the Greenwood community massacre (also referred to as the “Tulsa race riots”) of 1921 and participated in leadership development exercises meant to foster cultural awareness and emphasizes the role social justice plays in the City Year experience.

In a nutshell, the Idealist’s Journey is City Year’s leadership development program that gives our ACMs a space to enhance their City Year experience by reflecting, writing and thinking about their service year.

MLK Day Brings Tulsa Community Together to Refresh Hale High School Halls & Spirit

This year marked City Year Tulsa’s fifth annual day of service celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with nearly 400 community volunteers and students, AmeriCorps members and City Year staff braving the cold to participate in a “day ON, not a day off,” beautifying Hale High School through various service projects, including painting murals and inspirational quotes throughout the school, building benches and writing notes of encouragement to students.
